LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) is a free program for adult new immigrants who want to learn English. It is funded by the Canadian government.
LINC classes also introduce students to Canadian culture and services in the community. In LINC class, you will learn English to help you talk to store clerks, doctors, schoolteachers etc. You will learn about Canada’s political system, laws, health care, employment and many other topics.
You must be a newcomer to Canada, 17 years old or older, and approved for permanent residence.
If you want to take ELSA classes, you must take an English test at the Western ESL Services Language Assessment Centre. The address is below. You can make an appointment by calling 604-876-5756.

You will get a letter. The letter will say what day and time you should go for the assessment. The assessment centre will tell you what documents to bring with you.
Apply only when you can go to school. Do not apply when you are going to travel, going to the hospital or starting a new job. The assessment results are valid for up to one year. If you have not started classes within this time, you may have to take the test again.
You must have this test before you can go to LINC classes. After this test, the assessment office will decide your level. You cannot choose your level yourself.
There is a literacy level and there are three beginner levels (ELSA Levels 1,2,3). After your test, you will be able to choose the school you want to attend.
After your test at the assessment centre, you can check if we have a class available at Vancouver Formosa Academy. If we do, you will get a form which you can take to our school.
You can register at our school on Monday to Friday from 8:30-1:00 and 2:00-4:30. Classes start on Mondays. You may have to wait to start if the class is full. Please call 604-436-2332 for questions.
